Shim Shin-Do® - the Art of Spirit, Mind and Body.
This new art has taken the best and most effective techniques from previous styles and simplified the instruction, removing the fear and pain associated with traditional training.
While training in traditional Martial Arts, students are taught to kick and punch one another in order to develop self defense. Unfortunately, during this type of practice, injuries are common as well as anger and loss of self-confidence and self esteem for the student who does not "win" the sparring match.
Shim Shin-Do® training has eliminated this negative transfer of training in independent exercises by developing an interrelated training program to accelerate training and keep a balance of mind and body. Shim Shin-Do® teaches unique techniques and combinations which produce results within six to twelve months. This training will allow the student to develop confidence and proper self defense.
The curriculum of Shim Shin-Do® is quite different from other systems. We begin with instructions in effective ducking and how to generate maximum power from one's body for eachblock, kick and strikes from beginner to black belt and beyond.
Specifically designed to help the individual understand each of the muscle groups that are used in techniques, forms and combinations. These exercises develops flexibility, muscle tone, and relaxation. They are similar to chiropractic and yoga methods.
Our techniques were developed through an extensive research of biomechanics, boxing and Muy Thai Boxing techniques, in order to understand how maximum power is generated. All techniques are practiced against focus mitts and air shields in order to avoid injury due to hyperextension.
Combinations aid in the development of coordination, breathing control, conditioning and agility, by learning proper techniques and adapting muscle memory (fluid body movements).
The combinations that are taught become forms, which help to develop great cardiovascular conditioning and endurance. The forms also help to develop, visualization, and sense of direction.
Usually in martial arts training, students are often taught to free spar against each other. These sparring matches have strict rules and regulations such as, "no kicks to the groin" and "no shots to the face". These students are taught to defend themselves against an opponent who is involved in martial arts. In reality, however, if a person is a true martial artist, the possibilities of a confrontation are rare due to the fact that a true martial artist is expected to have discipline and a degree of self-control. The true martial artist is taught to use the speed of the mind, not the speed of the fist. He can walk away knowing that he does not have to prove himself to anyone.
Many sparring drills in martial arts schools are geared toward tournament competition. In this case, a student is trained to deliver the first strike in order to gain a point and win a trophy. In a realistic situation, whoever delivers the first blow may find themselves suspended from school or in other legal matters.
After a lifetime of extensive study in various forms of traditional martial arts, I have developed a way in which a student will be able to learn realistic throws, sweeps and take downs to properly develop confidence in fighting whether upright, up close or on the ground, if needed.
Through learning our unique combinations, these repetitious movements will be used in our drills. In order to safely learn, with the absence of fear and pain, a student will execute basic drills with a trained instructor while using safety equipment. They will be taught how to properly duck and block first, and then how to effectively counter attack. This system stresses the development of proper techniques, as well as speed, timing, awareness and power. At a higher level, a student is taught sparring strategies, such as how to set up an opponent and how to defend against an adversary who knows martial arts, etc.
Through this system, a student is taught how to properly and effectively defend him/herself in a realistic situation. Through our technique and training, a student will develop the skills and confidence he/she needs.
